Can I really become an RN with an online nursing degree?

The answer is yes! Most schools do allow you to earn your associate's degree online , and qualify for your initial RN license.

How does the program work?
Generally you can complete all the non clinical portions on the internet. Obviously, you are not allowed to complete your clinical requirements on the internet, so they are done at a medical facility located close to your home.


How do the classes work?
Although they may vary, most online programs are hosted on a website. Your instructor will post lecture material and your assignments on the site. There are usually discussion boards and forums where you can post your comments or questions, and interact with other students. Your instructor may set up a required virtual discussion, but other than that you can just log in and work at your convenience. Your assignments are sent to the instructor by e-mail. In some classes, your written work will take the place of the traditional type of tests. If not, your tests will usually be taken on the computer.

Can I work at my own pace?
Some online classes allow you to complete your course work at your own pace. There are some programs that are more affiliated with a traditional university that require you to keep the same quarter or semester schedule as the on campus students. Some programs are more structured, while others can be finished at an faster pace. Most classes usually take six to eight weeks to complete.

How could a nursing online degree benefit me?
If you are a busy working nurse with a family or other responsibilities you probably can't afford cut your work hours to attend school. Getting a distance degree is not any less demanding than a traditional program, but it does allow you to earn your advanced degree at your convenience. This option will save you time and money.


What types degrees are available?
The degrees that are offered most commonly are the RN, RN to BSN and the MSN. Some schools offer a wider variety of advanced degrees and certificates, but most will limit their online nursing programs to just a few.


How much should I plan to spend?
Costs will vary by school, but you should expect to pay anywhere from $100.00 to $350.00 dollars per credit. The average tuition for a program is between $100.00 to $175.00. There could also be registration and enrollment fees. A big advantage is that you can attend an out of state school without paying out of state charges.


What about financial aid or scholarships?
The same scholarships and financial aid offered to traditional students are usually offered to students in online programs.


Are there any requirements for enrolling in online nursing programs?
Check with the school that you are planning to attend to find out what their requirements are. Generally, most BSN programs require:

A minimum score on the ACT or SAT test.
2.0 to 3.25 minimum GPA
At least three years of high school level math including algebra II and geometry
At least three years of high school level science, to include biology and chemistry
Four years of high school level English classes
Two years of a high school level foreign language

If you want to earn a RN to BSN, an RN to MSN or a MSN degree, they usually require:

Graduation from an accredited nurse school
Current RN nurse license
2.5-3.0 GPA

Can I get credit for my work experience?
If you want to get credit for your work experience you have a couple of options, depending on the requirements of the school you are attending. Many programs will allow you to complete the CLEP (college level examination program) or the PEP (proficiency examination program in place of class work in the area that you have work experience in. Some will also allow you to use your portfolio that lists your experience for college credit.
