However, there are so many demands in daily life, that you may want to find a way to complete your degree even quicker. Have a plan
Work your plan and plan your work. When getting distance degrees, most students end up taking at least one course that is not necessary for graduation. This is a great thing to do if you want to do it for your own personal learning experience, however, if you are going for a speedy completion you should avoid taking non required classes. Check to see what your required classes are for graduation and put together a personal plan of study. Keep contact with your student advisor so they can help you stay on track and make sure that you are taking the required classes for your degree.
Get transfer equivalencies
If you have credits from other colleges, don't let all that hard work go to waste. Make sure that your current distance learning degree program will give you transfer equivalencies. After your distance training program has decided what credits it will allow you to transfer, double check to make sure that any of your other completed classes can be counted toward another requirement for graduation. Most schools have a specific office for reviewing petitions for transfer of credit. Ask them what their policies are for credit transfers and complete a petition. In your petition, make sure to include an explanation of what class you completed and why your credit for that class should be transferred. It will improve your chances of getting the credit transfer if you include a copy of the previous course description and a copy of the course handbook from both schools as comparison.
Test Out
By specific testing, you can prove your knowledge and earn credits. This can reduce your schedule of required classes. Many distance learning programs offer you the opportunity to take the College Level Examination Program exams (CLEP) for college credits. Some schools also offer their own tests in certain subjects. These testings can be expensive but it is usually less than the tuition you would pay for the course they replace.
Don't declare a minor
If you skip declaring a minor and drop all the classes for the minor, this could save you at least a semesters worth of work, if not more. Some schools no longer require you to declare a minor and, it is really not something mentioned or looked at in your career. Unless your declared minor is critical for your distance learning degree or will be very beneficial to your career goals, you may want to consider dropping minor classes from your study plan.
Make a portfolio
With different types of distance learning degrees your life experiences may be able to be counted as credits. If your school offers this, they will give you credit based on your portfolio that shows them proof of your knowledge and skills in a certain field. Some life experience sources are previous employment in that field, volunteering, community service, awards, activities and accomplishments.
Double up
If you have to work while getting your distance learning training you may be able to get credit for it. Some schools offer you college credit for internships,work study programs or even paid jobs that relate to your major. You can complete your distance learning degree program faster if you earn some credit for what you are already doing. Ask your guidance counselor if there are opportunities are available for you.
