Preparing for college can often be a confusing and stressful time for many students. Unfortunately, most who are entering into college don't understand what they should be doing in order to help them with their college preparation nor understand what they should do to help them prepare for college testing.
Most students fail to understand that there are actually two major tests that most colleges and universities use nationwide to help them to determine whether or not a student should be admitted into their school or at least be able to partake in a course of study.
College prep involves two exams which are available to help you in your preparation for college.
One test used to be called the Scholastic Aptitude Test or Scholastic Assessment Test, otherwise known as the SAT exam, but today is now called the SAT Reasoning Test. The SAT exam is administered by a private company, The College Board, and it is published and scored or graded by the Education Testing Service or ETS.
Although most international countries have their own standardized tests and although the SAT is mainly used in the United States, it is also available worldwide for any country or party interested in the SAT outside of the U.S.
Consisting of three sections, the SAT is comprised of Reading, Writing and Math. It also involves other subject tests such as: Language, English, History, Science, Literature and Mathematics. In order to take the SAT, students must register in advance and pay a small fee with their registration. Testing is offered several times yearly.
In order to help you with your SAT test prep, there are several college test preparation resources available. Check with your public library, guidance counselor as well as several online test prep sites to help you find good college test prep aids and test prep courses to help you prepare for the exam.
The other important exam is a standardized achievement test for college entrance which began in 1959. It is the ACT exam, otherwise known as the ACT Assessment. The testing sections of the ACT are very similar to the SAT although it has been revised over the years. As with the SAT, there are several ACT test prep courses and aides available to help you prepare for the ACT exam. Your public library, guidance counselor or the internet can also point you in the right direction for these sources.
It is important to note that you do not need to take both exams when preparing for college as the ACT and the SAT compete with each other. Most colleges, universities and schools will accept both the ACT and the SAT. It is also important to note that there are some small differences and goals between the ACT and the SAT.
Although there are disagreements among varying parties of how well each exam reaches their goals, the main areas of differences are:
The ACT aims to assess a students achievement or his general educational development along with the students potential to finish college work, whereas, the goal of the SAT is to measure the aptitude of the student, or critical thinking skills for his or her own academic success.
Both the ACT and the SAT consist of varying content between them.
The ACT has four mandatory subject tests of Math, science, reading and English and also has an optional writing test, although as a whole, it lacks vocabulary testing. In comparison, the SAT consists of math, reading and writing tests.
It is important to note that both the ACT and SAT exams cover different degrees of math.
Both the SAT and the ACT utilize different grading systems.
On the ACT, students are welcome to guess on answers for all questions, whereas on the SAT, students are not advised to take risks are are penalized for doing so. Also, the ACT does not deduct points for wrong answers, while SAT does deduct points for wrong answers.
