College Admissions - Five Tips!

The process of college admissions doesn't need to be stressful. However, if you are applying to schools that are more selective or to a particular program within a school that is more selective, you may need to put in a little more effort to make sure that it shows your strong points. Schools that are extremely selective such as the ivy league type admissions can be quite a bit more challenging and will take a bit of hard work.

The process of applying is not too hard, but the admission can be. It is smart to pick a variety of schools that you would like to attend. Be honest about your choices and do the proper research on each school first.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Once you have completed your research and you know to which schools you want to apply, find out if they use the "common application". This is a non profit that helps students and schools by providing the online application or an one in print. There are close to 300 different schools that use this program.

If some of the schools you want to apply to are on the list you can quickly download all the information necessary and get started. If one or more of the schools you have chosen are not on the list you can go to the website for that school and request an application. Most will have them available online.

Keep track of your deadlines by making a list of the due dates for each school. Most applications for college admissions are due by January 1st of the year for which you are applying. Usually, if you miss the deadline, your application will not be considered. If you are applying for early decision check with the school to find out their criteria. Most have a November 1st deadline.

You can now fill out the application online for most schools. This makes the process much easier and you don't have to mess with all that paper. You can save your work and finish it when you can, your information is encrypted and only you can access it. Your college application essays can also be uploaded online. If you are completing written paper application keep it neat and make sure you do not have any spelling or grammatical errors.

Most colleges will need a copy at least one college admission test. When taking your SAT or ACT test you can have the results sent to six colleges. You can also have them sent to you and you can send them with the rest of your information packet.

All schools need a copy of your high school transcripts with colleges admissions. Most require your high school to send this directly to them. Allow your high school at least three weeks to send your transcripts. If you obtain a copy of your transcript from your high school and mail it with your information packet - make sure it is in a sealed envelope from your high school. If the envelope has been opened it will be refused.

This is by far the most time consuming part of the process. The college essay should be 300-500 words or longer. Make sure you pick an original topic. Keep it interesting and entertaining for the reader. Take your time and have a few people read it before you send it. Make sure to proofread carefully! Spelling and grammar errors do not look good.

Some schools require letters of recommendation. This could be from a teacher, counselor, coach, church leader or anyone who knows your leadership and academic strengths.

College admissions can be an involved process, but it doesn't have to be difficult. Use these tips and do your research. Get started on your college application process today!
